The two common shrink processes are steam and hot air. We see the use of steam somewhat more frequently for large editions, as the energy consumption in production is lower than with hot air. The use of the appropriate shrink technology is usually based on this. It is not so much a question of what works better, but of how large the shrinkage production is.
From a technical point of view, we cannot determine any differences in performance, whether a product is shrunk using steam or hot air.
There is not an “Industry Standard” for the CoF of a shrink sleeve. We recommend that the converter be contacted to obtain any specific CoF requirement for sleeves that are intended for use in their equipment.
Specific inks for shrink sleeve applications should support the following features:
- Good performance characteristics with good color strength.
- Efficiency and consistency on press performance.
- Good performance varies depending on shrink substrates, e.g. on PETg, PVC, OPS.
- Optimum performance of whites require adequate Coefficient of Friction.
There is a lot of awareness being brought around this topic in the industry and proactively addressing this topic. The use of low migration or regulatory compliant products may be an approach that offers additional value to your products. We recommend contacting the brand owner to determine what requirements may be needed. ACTEGA offers products that meet certain regulatory requirements such as Nestlé Compliance. Please contact your ACTEGA representative for more details.
Both PVC and PETG are commonly used for shrink sleeve applications. In many situations the container and/or the brand owner may dictate which material should be used for an application.
